Penang Best Food Guide - Where to Eat, What to Eat, All the Long Queues You Must Beat
Everyone knows that Penang is a foodie's paradise, but do you really know how much there is to eat? The three of us had 50 dishes in 50 hours, and we barely even scraped the tip of the iceberg! Apart from being a UNESCO heritage site, charming Georgetown is host to tons of awesome hawker stalls and cool cafes. I think that the location of Georgetown is impeccable, and will recommend that you stay in this area as well! It's easy to get around, and Grab rides are very affordable. Are you ready for a glimpse of what Penang has to offer?
Hawker Stalls
3888 Fried Oyster
We walked to this coffeeshop for the prawn noodles and were surprised to see that it was very crowded. After placing an order for the prawn noodles, I was just watching this guy whip up plates of fried oyster. Thankfully, I decided to order it because the fried oyster was the highlight of our trip! It was so so delicious! You may also want to try the prawn noodles, lor mee, and char kway teow in this coffeeshop.
4-70, Lebuh Presgrave, George Town, 10300 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia
Ah Leng Char Koay Teow
The char kway teow was good! Remember to add more egg. There's a couple selling some kueh in the coffeeshop, and I'll suggest that you skip it.
Jalan Dato Keramat, Kampung Makam, 10150 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia
Thursday - Tuesday : 1030am - 330pm
Uncle Aunty Wan Tan Mee
We couldn't decide which wanton mee stall to go to. There was Uncle Gan's, Hong Kee, Uncle Aunty Wanton mee etc. We eventually made a trip to Uncle Aunty Wanton Mee at Chulia Street. The stall is not named, and there's just wanton mee (in Mandarin) and the price points stated on the front of the stall. The noodles were springy and absolutely delish.
275, Chulia St, Georgetown, 10200 George Town, Penang, Malaysia
Daily : 6pm - 12am
Toh Soon Cafe
Tucked away in a little alley, Toh Soon Cafe offers charcoal-grilled kaya toast, toast with egg, coffee and more. Remember to ask for more kaya, or a pot of kaya!
Lebuh Campbell, George Town, 10450 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia
Monday - Saturday : 8am - 330pm
Deen Maju Nasi Kandar
This nasi kandar attracts super long queues so make sure you avoid the peak periods. The rice comes with 4 different types of curry and I'll strongly recommend that you get 2 pieces of the very yummy chicken that we all fell in love with.
170, Jalan Gurdwara, 10300 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia
Daily : 2pm - 10pm
Roti Bakar Transfer Road
We tried the roti bakar which was lightly crisp, and a simple delight with the eggs. What stood out more was the thick roti canai which came with a really tender chicken leg.
Kafe Kheng Pin
The Loh Bak was coated in a really light batter and the fried tofu and prawns were especially yummy!
20, 16, Jalan Penang, George Town, 10050 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia
Tuesday - Sunday : 7am - 2pm
Moh Teng Pheow Nonya Koay
I've never been a huge fan of kueh but I tried a couple here. The curry puff was my fave, and my friends raved about the ang ku kueh. The kaya was so good that I bought 2 tubs(350g) of it! I then bought smaller containers to store them so I can carry them onto the plane with me. We even tabao-ed the kueh back to Singapore!
Lebuh Chulia, Jalan Masjid, 10200 George Town, Pulau Pinang
Tuesday - Sunday : 1030am - 5pm
Green House Prawn Mee Corner
So, in Penang, there's no Singapore Hokkien Mee. What they have is Hokkien Prawn Mee. It's like our soup prawn mee, without prawns. They use dried shrimp instead. So don't expect to fish out a prawn, or detect any prawn flavour in the soup. Even though the prawn mee was almost completely void of prawns, the soup was still flavourful and comforting. We heard that the lor mee is worth a try too. If you only can have one dish, then go for the mixed bowl which has both prawn noodles and lor mee. Let me know how it tastes if you try it!
133-A, Jalan Burma, George Town, 10050 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia
Monday - Saturday : 9am - 330am
Sunday : 6pm - 330am
Air Itam Bisu Laksa
This might not be the famous stall that everyone raves about, but the laksa here was really appetising. I love the tasty soup, the fresh mackerel and the springy noodles. It's quite spicy for me, but it's so shiok!
Jalan Pasar, Paya Terubong, 11500 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia
Million Loh Mee
While we came here for the lor mee which was thick and flavourful, we were blown away by the Kway Teow Tng. Make sure you get it! It's such a flavour bomb!
15A, Medan Angsana Bandar Baru, 11500 Ayer Itam, Penang
Tuesday - Sunday : 730am - 5pm
Wai Kee Char Siew
Wai Kee is said to have the best roast meats in town. My friends really enjoyed the char siew but I didn't. It was tough and dry to me. I thought the roast pork was pretty great though!
348 Lebuh Chulia Street 10200 George Town, Penang Malaysia
Tuesday - Friday : 1030am - 230pm, 6pm - 8pm
Saturday - Sunday : 1030am - 230pm
Goh Thiew Chik Hainanese Chicken Rice
Penang's chicken rice is not like ours. The rice is not oily, or flavourful. But the chicken in Penang is really good. Every chicken that we had was really tender and juicy
338, Chulia St, Georgetown, 10200 George Town, Penang, Malaysia
Daily : 11am - 3pm
Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul
The queue for the famous chendol is perpetually long, and you'll see people standing around on the street enjoying the sweet treat. You can actually also have the chendul in the restaurant, with the same name, just down the road.
Jalan Penang, 27 & 29, Lebuh Keng Kwee, George Town, 10450 George Town, Pulau Pinang
Monday - Friday : 1030am - 7pm
Saturday - Sunday : 1030am - 730pm
Bangkok Lane's Mee Goreng
The mee goreng here has a loyal following. Don't forget to ask for more egg! You may also like to try the mee rebus, and the teh tarik here. It's so tough getting good teh tarik in Penang, but you can get quite a solid cup here.
280, Jalan Burma, George Town, 10350 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia
Tuesday - Sunday : 830am - 630pm
Lorong Seratus Tahun Curry Mee
This well-known curry mee is very popular with the locals. I didn't really like it to be honest. It's kinda watered down, and it's nothing like our curry mee in Singapore. But I guess you have to try it yourself! The other famous stall is Sisters Curry Mee.
34, Lorong Seratus Tahun, 10400 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia
Friday - Wednesday : 730am - 230pm
Cafes
Kafka
Possibly one of the prettiest cafes in Penang! It was very crowded even on a weekday afternoon. We had tea and juice, and my dining partner really enjoyed the Nasi Lemak which was a special dish available that day.

Rabbit x Hold Up
The cafe looks cozy, with just about 4 seats by the window, and a few more at the counter. Little did we know that opening the "fridge" leads you into the back of the cafe!
73, Jalan Kuala Kangsar, George Town, 10100 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia
Wednesday - Monday : 10am - 730pm
ChinaHouse
ChinaHouse is probably the one cafe that every tourist visits. There are more than 50 cakes available everyday, so come prepared! You'll definitely be spoilt for choice! We had the carrot cake, tiramisu and chocolate earl grey.
53, Beach St, Georgetown, 10300 George Town, Penang, Malaysia
Daily : 9am - 1am
Le Petit Four
This pretty space promises intricate and delicate French pastries. The Lemon Tart was so pretty and I just had to have it. I loved that it wasn't too sour. I wished I had space in my stomach for more sweet treats! The eclair looked really good too. I was also pretty pleased with the coffee that's made with a La Marzocco!
310, Lebuh Pantai, George Town, 10300 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia
Friday - Tuesday : 9am - 6pm
Restaurant
Indigo Restaurant(Blue Mansion)
This is the place where the mahjong scene in Crazy Rich Asians was shot! A 3-course set lunch goes for just 65RM. The place is beautiful, and the food was pretty great. We really enjoyed the Wild Caught Prawns, and the Seafood Stew!
14, Lebuh Leith, George Town, 10200 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia
Daily : 12pm - 3pm, 6pm - 10pm
Night Market/Stalls
McCallum Street Night Market
This pasar malam has so many food stalls! Must-tries include carrot cake, tauhuey, and soya bean drink. You may also want to try the fried mushroom, and prawn paste fried items. Expect satay, lok lok, bubble tea, pasta, and more. SO MUCH TO EAT. I think the pasar malam moves around so you can catch them at other locations on other days as well.
Lintang Macallum 1, Pengkalan Weld, 10300 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia
Monday : 530pm - 1030pm
New Lane Street Food Stalls
If you're looking for an outdoor "Newton-like" dining experience, head to New Lane Food Stalls. Go for the duck egg char kway teow, chicken wings, and satay. Please skip the ikan bakar and chee cheong fun.
Lorong Baru, George Town, 10450 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia
Thursday - Tuesday : 4pm - 11pm
Other places that we wanted to try :
Claypot Apom Manis at Kedai Kopi Swee Kong (closes at 10am)
New Cathay
Tek Sen
Kimberley Street Kway Chap
Kebaya
Siam Road Char Kway Teow
The Alley Cafe (not the bubble tea)
We really ate so much, and piled on a few kilograms, but no regrets at all! Enjoy Penang!
