Wagyumafia The Cutlet Sandwich - The First and Best Wagyu Katsu Sando in Tokyo
Wagyumafia set out to raise awareness and educate the general public, and especially those with a discerning palate, about genuine wagyu beef. Over the years, we've seen the rise of "Kobe-style" beef in America, Australian wagyu beef and more, but they're nothing like true blue wagyu from Japan. Hence, Wagyumafia's mission is definitely commendable. Situated in Nakameguro, 2-year-old Wagyumafia The Cutlet Sandwich is a small little space that has a very lean menu. They offer katsu sando (cutlet sandwiches), a couple of sides, and a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
The friendly and warm crew left a really deep impression. Having been to Japan many times, I haven't quite seen any service staff so enthusiastic, playful, and fun.
We were contemplating to get the Kobe Chauteaubriand ($250SGD). We figured that it was too hefty a price tag for us, and opted for the Sirloin ($100SGD).
This is a special tobasco or rather, Wagyusco, that's customized for Wagyumafia
Encased in a thin, light, and crisp batter, the juicy beef was sandwiched between slightly crisp bread. The beef was delicious, though not as tender as I thought it would have been. It was also just sufficiently fatty. I liked the wagyusco which added a hint of tanginess and mild spiciness to the mix. However, $100SGD for this sandwich was definitely way too costly. The sandwich was not filling at all and this will make for an expensive snack, or a quick appetizer if you have cash to burn before your proper lunch. $100SGD can get you tons of amazing food, even a top-notch omakase meal, or an awesome Kobe beef barbecue in Japan, so to pay $100SGD for a sandwich this small, I felt a tad ripped off to be honest.
Many restaurants have come up with their own versions of the katsu sando, and you can even get it in Singapore at Tamashii Robataya which uses Miyazaki beef in their sandwich. If you''re asking whether I'll return to Wagyumafia The Cutlet Sandwich, my answer is no. At its price tag, the sando is something that's worth trying once, but probably not again.
