(CLOSED)Dinner by Heston Blumenthal - Is This Famous Restaurant Worth a Visit?

I made a reservation at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal quite sometime before my trip to Melbourne. I was super stoked for my dinner here. The kind folks at Dinner saved me a table by the window, even though it was just me. I was quite touched as I thought that they would give such lovely seats to couples or families, instead of a lone diner, especially when the restaurant was full.

A refreshing cocktail to start.

Instead of the bestselling Meat Fruit, I picked the Hay Smoked Kingfish($38) as an appetizer. Kingfish is a very popular ingredient in Melbourne. Most of the restaurants that I visited have it on their menu. The Hay Smoked Kingfish carried a pleasant smoky aroma that was quite captivating. The dish didn't quite leave an impression, however. An ensemble of pickled lemon salad, gentleman’s relish, wood sorrel, and smoked roe accompanied the kingfish slices. I think it's best if you opt for their meat fruit instead.

I had a hard time deciding between the Black Angus Ribeye ($84) and Sirloin of David Blackmore Wagyu ($125). I eventually settled on the ribeye after hearing that it was a bigger portion haha. I asked for a medium rare, as I always do, and waited patiently for the arrival of my steak. The steak is served together with a little saucer of mushroom ketchup, and an adorable bucket of fries.

The steak, which looked amazing on the outside, was more medium than medium rare when sliced open. The steak was decent, but definitely not comparable to what we can get at the more premium steakhouses in Singapore. The triple cooked chips and mushroom ketchup were pretty amazing though!

I was really full, so I skipped dessert, and called for the bill. To my surprise, I received an earl grey chocolate mousse and crackers on the house. I have a soft spot for the specific combination of earl grey and chocolate so I'm sure you can guess that the mousse sat really well with me.

While my dinner at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal wasn't particularly outstanding, I appreciated the warm service, and also adored the ambience of the restaurant. Perhaps I should have gone for their signature dishes. I really should have done my research on the best dishes here before I popped by. When the staff asked if I wanted the Tipsy Cake, and I said no, his eyes actually widened a little, possibly in horror. I didn't think I would be able to finish it so I didn't order it. Well, maybe next time, since I'll be in Melbourne for a year!
