(CLOSED)The Playground Coffee - Best Cafe in the Far West of Singapore

 photo The Playground Coffee 6.jpg
The Playground Coffee took over the space formerly occupied by Pits & Pans. The cafe sits in Nanyang Community Centre and is a cozy space that serves up good coffee and decent brunch fare. You may be able to find similarities, such as the use of geometric shapes in the interior design and logo, between The Playground Coffee and The Populus Coffee & Food Co at Neil Road. This is because The Playground Coffee is set up by ex-staff of the popular Populus.

Coffee here is brewed from 2 Degrees North Coffee, which is proudly roasted by The Populus. Possibly the best coffee you can get in the whole Boon Lay to Clementi area.

The Thai Style Pasta with Gochujang Prawn Skewer($18) was an interesting dish that brought both Thai and Korean elements together. The linguine was done al dente, very much to our liking, and the addition of peanuts was a nice touch. There's also a mild sweetness present in the entire dish. The tiger prawns were a tad too crunchy, a little too hard, in my opinion. Overall, the dish was decent but I felt that they could have given just a little more linguine.

Everyone loves a good beef bowl. While the Blowtorched Ribeye Donburi($18) won't blow you away, it will still please rumbling tummies and hungry souls. Furikake Japanese rice is topped with a sous vide egg, pickled cucumbers and ribeye cubes. The beef was a little chewy, somewhat tender, and thank goodness, not tough nor dry. It was quite a tasty mix but the price point might make you compare it to other beef bowls out there, and might possibly spark a little dissatisfaction.

The Hearty Breakfast ($16) was an ensemble of Frankische sausage, sliced back bacon, balsamic mixed mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, baked beans, slaw salad, multigrain toast and your choice of eggs (sous vide, scrambled or sunny side up). It's definitely nothing fancy and nothing to rave about, but I think that applies to most "big breakfast" plates. If I could build my own plate, I would have removed all the vegetables and gotten myself more bacon and sausage! I liked the mushrooms which carried a tangy hint, but the eggs could have been fluffier and moister.

The Playground Coffee doesn't serve the best cafe fare in Singapore, but for the relatively affordable price point, and good cups of joe that they pull, they are definitely the best cafe in the west. And, they are the only cafe that I'll return to in the west.
