Nui - A Charming Cafe & Bar in Asakusa
When I was in Tokyo, I made a few friends who arranged for a quick dinner at Nui before I flew home to Singapore. Nui is located in the quiet Asakusa district and it took us quite awhile to find it. The entire neighbourhood was so quiet by 7pm that we wondered if we were on the right track. The lively atmosphere in Nui was in stark contrast to the cold silent night just outside its doors.
Nui is actually a popular hostel and this probably explains why the place was packed with more foreigners than locals, mostly chilling over mugs of beer. The industrial-chic cafe boasts a La Marzocco, should you be looking to start your day with a great cup of coffee.
We were pleasantly surprised by how delicious the fries were. Encased within the really thin wall of every fry is a generous filling of potato. The fries are really crispy but soft at the same time. I've never had such great shoestring fries before! Sweet chilli is drizzled over and a blob of sour cream sits right in the middle. The combination is simply, brilliant.
The Chicken Nanban was yet another dazzler. The batter that the chicken was coated in was utterly thin but wonderfully crisp. The tender and flavourful chicken was quite a masterpiece together with that cold tartar sauce that lays atop.
Nui has this charming laidback vibe and somehow, I felt right at home here. Nui will definitely be one of my favourite bars or cafes if it was in Singapore!
