Chef Joey, the former head chef of Tiong Bahru Bakery, has opened up his very own industrial chic cafe in the east. Their specialties include Sous Vide Beef Cheek Stew, Crab Pasta, Gourmet Coffee and Apple Crumble.
Sweet Potato Fries
I like that the fries came with a dusting of powdered sugar which gives the fries an extra sweet, albeit very mild, kick. It looks way more photogenic too! The fries were done very well, not rock-hard as if over-fried or re-fried but soft on the inside and crisp on the out. Would recommend this if you're looking for an appetizer to share.
Sous Vide Beef Cheek Stew
We couldn't resist their signature beef cheeks which have been braised for an arduous 24 hours before they go on a bed of smooth creamy mash. The dish is decorated with a variety of braised vegetables that I religiously avoided, apart from the small side of corn. I love beef cheeks. When executed perfectly, they not only absorb the full flavours of the robust stew that they sit in but they also possess the ability to just melt away beautifully in your mouth. The beef cheeks here were quite exactly that.
Coffee-wise, I had an iced latte which was too thin and acidic for my liking. If that's your type of cuppa, you will enjoy the coffee here. It's a pity that Builders is located so far away from my home or I'll definitely come back to try their wings and crab pasta. I need a cafe like this in my neighbourhood!
