Jamie's Italian @ Forum (Orchard Road)
If you have been to Orchard Road in the recent months, you would have most probably caught a glimpse or two of the eye-catching Jamie's Italian signboard outside Forum Shopping Mall. This is the second outlet of the global success to have opened up on our sunny little island, and the first to be serving up pizzas.
Elderflower Lychee Spritz
What's not to love about a cocktail with elderflower, lychee and some fizz? Sweet and refreshing!
Cured Meat Plank- $16.50 / per pax
The meat plank consists of San Daniele Prosciutto aged for 18 months, hot soppressata (dry salami), mortadella, bresaola(air-dried salted beef), mini buffalo mozzarella, pecorino & chilli jam, pickles, Gaeta black olives, Mammoth green olives & crunchy salad. A no-fuss dish, albeit with big names, that's guaranteed to open up your appetite for a hearty meal
Cauliflower Fritti - $13.50
These fried little balls were more than just delightful. Think a mix of cauliflower and parmesan deep-fried till crispy and beautifully golden-brown. As you sink your teeth into that mushy soft mess encased in a thin crisp batter, you'll know why this is one of the most popular dishes here. That spicy arrabbiata dip just makes it all the more delicious than it already is. Coming from a carnivore who abhors vegetables, this is surely saying something
220g Rump Steak- $32.00
Under that glorious spread of garlic butter is a perfectly medium rare rump steak that was cooked "al mattone" (under a brick so that the meat is pushed further against the grates of the grill) and spruced up with just touches of olive oil and lemon juice. Tender, juicy and extremely flavourful, the steak was already so good on its own but with the palatable garlic butter, this was a literal party in my mouth. I really enjoyed it!
Grilled Pork Chop - $38
I was told that the pork chop is a highlight that I couldn't miss and I was so eager and excited for its arrival. Brined for 24 hours before it is cooked al mattone, the pork chop is served atop a bed of bagna cauda, and armed with a side of crackling and salad. The pork chop didn't live up to expectations, unfortunately. It was unevenly cooked(probably due to the uneven thickness of the cut) which resulted in sporadic tough patches. The well-cooked parts were really juicy and tender though. While half of the table preferred the pork chop, I very much preferred the Rump Steak
Octopus and Mussel Spaghetti- $17/$25.50
You might think that this is just a plate of spaghetti with different ingredients thrown in and cooked together. However, this is most definitely not the case. The amount of effort that has gone into the execution of this dish is truly commendable. The octopus is braised with numerous spices and ingredients for 75 minutes before flash fried squid rings, fresh mussels and quartered tomatoes are added in with white wine and lemon juice. The homemade squid ink pasta is the last addition to the mix. I don't like squid ink pasta. The colour scares me and I've never really wanted to try it but I'm glad I gave it a shot because it was really delish
Penne Carbonara - $23.50
This is one of my favourite carbonaras to date. It's a drier rendition which means that it's not as creamy or rich and there's a hint of lemon which keeps things fresh. And it certainly kept me hooked too. Love the firmness and bite of the pasta dishes!
Italian Hot Pizza- $24.50
Pizzas are only available at this outlet and believe me, you will fall in love with these pizzas like I did. The pizza dough is made from premium Italian bread flour and is shaped through gentle stretching which leads to a crisp texture and crust. The texture of the pizza, as promised, was indeed wonderful. The tomato sauce is made by pushing fresh tomatoes through a sieve, so that bits and little chunks of the tomatoes are retained. Equipped with chilli padi and pickled chillies, the tomato sauce packs a small punch and comes complete with homemade meat balls which were very yummy. More meatballs would be nice though.
Funghi Pizza- $23.50
The heavenly smell of the truffle butter which coats the surface of the pizza got to us before the pizza even did. I love that the smell of truffle takes over my senses before I even take a bite of the pizza. The hand stretched pizza is crisp at the edges, not too doughy and is served on a special stoneware plate to retain its heat and crispiness. The fantastic combination of cheesy bechamel, truffle cream, truffle butter and smoked mozzarella amazed me more than I thought it would.
Lemon Meringue Cheesecake - $12.50
Made from the best Amalfi lemons, I expected alot from the lemon curd. Slightly sour, and mildly sweet with the captivating scent of lemons, the lemon curd was incredibly enjoyable. The blackcurrant compote was unnecesary in my opinion even though it spiced up the otherwise boring look of the cheesecake. The spongy Italian meringue top didn't impress either because I prefer my meringue smooth and creamy
Epic Brownie - $12.50
Epic, seriously, in every way. I could hardly care about the salted caramel ice cream and amaretti popcorn because come on, that brownie was unbelievably good. I'm never wowed by brownies because they're so common and I'll never ever order a brownie for dessert. I've never had a favourite brownie, either, because they just don't impress me. I thank the kind heavens very much for allowing me to meet this gorgeous work of art. This brownie was so dense, so rich, so moist and simply put, divine. It's not floury or cakey and it was almost like a warm chocolate pudding melting in your mouth! This was unforgettable and I'll strongly recommend that you end your meal on an epic note, like I did
I've tried Jamie's Italian in London, and I loved it. And I loved my experience here too. The open kitchen concept allowed me to see that every dish actually goes through a taste-test before it goes out to patrons. Their commitment to high standards is laudable and if you're looking for a really decent place for dinner in town, I'll really recommend Jamie's Italian. Prices are on the steeper end but you know you're getting bang for your buck
