Shinkei Japanese Restaurant

Media Invite

Located near the Toa Payoh library and a short distance away from the MRT is Shinkei, a Japanese buffet restaurant. I’ve never heard of Shinkei but judging from the number of people present at the restaurant, I’m guessing that it must be quite popular!

The server recommended the Kodomo No Nomimono. It’s shaped and designed to look like beer but there is absolutely no alcohol in it and it’s actually a drink for kids! When poured into the mug, the drink has a thick layer of foam on top that really makes it look like beer.

With hundreds of items on their menu, I have to say that the selection at Shinkei is pretty extensive. We kickstarted the meal with a sashimi platter (duh!) There are nine types of sashimi available but tuna wasn’t served on the plate as the chef felt that the batch of tuna that had arrived that morning wasn’t beautiful enough to be served. Swordfish has always been my favourite but the swordfish at Shinkei is quite a disappointment. There was so much water present in the sashimi that I could hardly taste the fish. Perhaps it’s been frozen for too long or something? I don’t know. Everything else was pretty alright but surprisingly, I took a special liking to the cuttlefish for its chewy and slightly sticky texture.

A very plain looking steamed egg that had its appearance spiced up with some decorations from the bowl of complimentary yu sheng.

A must-have for me whenever I dine at Japanese establishments is the soft shell crab handroll! The one at Shinkei was pretty yummy!

We also tried several of their sushi rolls and a few items from the fried and grilled section. The sushi rolls were really compact with a lot of rice packed together. Unfortunately, the rice lacked any taste of vinegar or simple put, they just tasted like our plain white rice, just stickier. The fried and grilled dishes that we picked were pretty mediocre and nothing really left an impression
